First held in 1995, and sponsored by the Irish Institute of Master Mariners, master mariner is an individual senior seamanship competition for Venture and Rover Scouts, testing knowledge in advanced maritime topics and exploring professional nautical careers through unique competition venues including NMCI, Dublin Port and the Marine institute to name a few.
This has become one of Sea Scouting's highest standard individual trophies and has continued to the present day. The competition tests scouts individually on a wide range of basic and advanced seamanship skills including navigation, ropework, meteorology, practical boat-handling, chartwork, water safety, and maritime theory, as well as a self led research project presented on the day.
